'Real politicians of France'

October 30, 2014  •  Orange County Register

Given the numerous problems facing France today, it is clear that French politicians need to be doing something different if they hope to get their country and its beleaguered economy working again. However, appearing on a reality TV show probably isn't the kind of change that most French voters would have been expecting.

Regardless, several senior political figures from both the left and the right made the dubious decision recently to put on heavy makeup and disguises in order to "blend in" with everyday people and learn what it's like for everybody else, all the while being filmed for the new show, "Mr. and Mrs. Everyman."

The backlash, unsurprisingly, has been swift and harsh.

CalPERS can't kill hedge funds

September 17, 2014  •  Los Angeles Times

The news this week that the California Public Employees' Retirement System was liquidating its hedge fund portfolio brought accusations from critics of these private, unregulated funds that their time in the sun was finally over. Dictatorial dynasty in the making?

August 22, 2014  •  The Orange County Register

Grace Mugabe was appointed secretary of the party's Women's League, which entitles her to a seat on the party's governing politburo. The women's group also endorsed her husband, president since 1987, as their preferred candidate for the 2018 elections.

Gory image outrages Australia

August 15, 2014  •  The Orange County Register

One of Australia's most-wanted terrorists, Khaled Sharrouf, gained further notoriety this week when he posted on Twitter a photo of his 7-year-old son holding up the severed head of a Syrian soldier. The two are believed to be in northern Syria, where the father is fighting as part of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, known as ISIS, or just the Islamic State.

The caption to the photo said simply, "That's my boy!"
